Blackwing Volume 93 Corita Kent Pencils
Blackwing is at it again. With a playful design, the Blackwing Volume 93 Corita Kent Pencils are very colorful. If you’re unfamiliar, Corita Kent was an educator, artist, and social justice advocate. She believed that art can be used as a tool for creating dialogue, reflection, and change. Kent was chair of the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College in L.A. One of her well-known exercises taught students how to slow down and see the world with a fresh perspective. I feel like this is such an important lesson, and will always be relevant.
First of all, the Blackwing Volume 93 Corita Kent Pencils are a tribute to Kent and her message to slow down and find gratitude in the everyday. Importantly, Blackwing ensures that 5% of the proceeds from this pencil will support continued work in art education through the Corita Art Center.
Secondly, this Volume 93 is the latest in Blackwing’s hit Volumes series. They’ve released several Volumes in a shorter amount of time than usual. I truly hope this trend continues. I’m even more pleased that this one uses soft graphite. Previously, Blackwing used firm and extra firm graphite in several Volume editions in a row. I’m very happy with this change. Soft graphite provides much smoother writing in my experience.
Notably, this box of 12 limited edition pencils features one of the six colorful brush strokes that make up Kent’s iconic rainbow swash. Therefore, you get two of each color design in the box. The rainbow swash was commissioned in 1971, and adorns a 140 foot tall natural gas storage tank along I-93 in Dorchester, MA.
Finally, underneath the colorful brush strokes lies a white background. “Blackwing 93” is all that’s imprinted on the pencil. Sitting atop the pencil is a white ferrule and matching white eraser. I look forward to seeing what Blackwing creates next.
