Conklin Endura Abalone Shell Gunmetal Collection

Conklin is on a winning streak of introducing amazing limited edition pens. Their newest, the Conklin Endura Abalone Shell Gunmetal Collection, is a great example of this. It’s a limited edition of only 1898 pens made for each mode of writing. When I think about how far Conklin pens have come along with quality, unique design, and flair, the last several pen collections have been a pleasure to use and review. Conklin keeps getting better and better. And if you’re looking for a sparkling pen that showcases your shiny personality, then the Conklin Endura Abalone Shell Gunmetal Collection is perfect for you.

First, the fountain pen (and the new rollerball) has a threaded barrel on both ends. The reason this is important is when you post your cap on the back of the barrel, it won’t fling off as you write with increased speed. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally flung off the cap to my fountain pen or rollerball from this, which is why I no longer post the cap when writing. The fountain pen is equipped with a high-quality, deluxe-action performance JoWo nib. It’s available in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, stub, and Omniflex. Since you can fill with an international size cartridge/converter, I recommend using Monteverde’s Horizon Blue as a great matching ink. Or if you want an ink with some sheen to match the pen’s sheen, Monteverde’s California Teal has a bit of that.

New to Conklin’s limited edition range is the rollerball. If you want all the smooth-writing liquidy ink action of a fountain pen, but want the solid tip of a ballpoint, here’s your pen. Easily refill your rollerball with Schmidt 888 or 5888 rollerball refills. The 888 comes in black or blue, and fine or medium points. In addition to the standard black and blue options, the 5888 is available in a wide variety of colors.

Lastly, the ballpoint is equipped with smooth twist-action retraction. I love the way it feels perfectly balanced and nicely weighted in my hand. It’s a heavier pen, which feels really substantial and not overbearing. At the same time, this ballpoint isn’t too heavy. As with most Conklin ballpoints, this one refills with my favorite Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint or gel refills. It’s smooth as silk writing with the Monteverde Superbroad ballpoint refills.

One of the first things I noticed when I picked up this Conklin Endura is the illusion of facets. Looking at the pen from a distance, it seems as though you’d feel ridges upon handling the pen. Yet, all three modes are perfectly rounded and cylindrical. The layer of Abalone Shell is what makes it look like there are faceted sides. Yet, holding the pen is smooth as can be with many layers of a polish to perfect the aesthetic.
