Graf von Faber-Castell Pen Of The Year 2021 Knights
Every year Graf von Faber-Castell releases their “Pen of the Year”. It’s an extra special pen, and of a higher caliber than the rest of the Graf von Faber-Castell line. It’s always themed toward a unique subject matter. One of the details that sets this series apart from the rest is how it’s made of precious materials. Of course, as with all Graf von Faber-Castell pens, you get high quality precision engineering and craftsmanship with all parts made and manufactured completely in Germany. This year’s pen, the Graf von Faber-Castell Pen Of The Year 2021 Knights, is one of my favorites from the series to date.
First of all, I love the subject matter of knights. Everything about medieval knights is alluring. From legends and folklore of bravery, honesty, loyalty, and heroism, these are some of the greatest qualities. Stories about these great knights draw me in. Whether it’s books, t.v. shows, or movies, if it’s about knights I have to read/watch it (even if the trailer for the show/movie looks horribly made). Needless to say, I’m hooked on this pen.
Secondly, while the Graf von Faber-Castell Pen Of The Year 2021 Knights is made in both fountain pen and rollerball, I’m only focusing on the fountain pen. My reason is that an older subject matter of knighthood deserves focus on an older writing system. It’s more time-period appropriate. Plus the nib is really cool on this pen. It’s made of 18k gold, but is coated in Ruthenium to match the pen. As for size, it’s a magnum size nib (Graf von Faber-Castell’s term), and comes available in your choice of fine, medium, broad, and double broad. Of course, a massive and substantial pen like this uses a high-capacity piston-filling mechanism. What ink would you fill it with? I’d probably use Monteverde’s Moonstone ink to match the pen. Importantly, the fountain pen is numbered, made of only 375 pieces. While the rollerball, also numbered, is made of 125 pieces.
Thirdly, as I mentioned, the materials used in the Pen Of The Year make it extra special. And the Graf von Faber-Castell Pen Of The Year 2021 Knights is made with some really interesting materials. Importantly, I love how the barrel is made of Damascus steel. This steel is made through a process of forging the metal by repeated welding and folding. Therefore, this is characterized by an easily recognizable wave-like pattern in the metal. The process makes Damascus steel extra strong and durable, while able to withstand external force. Due to this welding and folding process, no two will look the same.
However, continuing with the cap and grip section, the materials used are varied. The grip section of the pen is made to resemble that of a sword’s leather strap grip with a milled brown lacquer. The cap is designed to look like chain-mail. It’s got an anthracite gray surface with a matte PVD titanium coating. On top of the cap is a “heraldic cross” or “cross of hope”, and the opposite end on the back of the barrel is a red, faceted garnet with a sunray cut. In conclusion, in this case it’s even easier and more accurate to say “the pen is mightier than the sword”!
