Lamy Aion Deep Dark Blue Special Edition Pen Collection

Lamy Aion Deep Dark Blue Special Edition Pen Collection

When it comes to a consistent line of pens, Lamy does it best. I love their wide range of options. If you’re looking for an entry level pen, there’s the Lamy Safari and Al-Star. If you’re looking for something a bit nicer, there’s the Lamy 2000. Yet for an in-between option I like the Lamy Studio and the Lamy Aion. Funny enough, both collections just came out with a new finish. I’m excited about the new Lamy Aion Deep Dark Blue Special Edition Pen Collection.

First of all, the Lamy Aion Deep Dark Blue Special Edition Pen Collection has a new color and finish. The smooth, deep-drawn aluminum body components of the Lamy Aion pen are the first of their kind. It gives the Aion series a unique, harmonious appearance. Brushed and blasted surfaces are refined with a brilliant silk-matte coating finish, creating formal tension. The sturdy high gloss polished clip perfectly rounds off the overall design.

Secondly, the shape of the Aion is like a combination of the curviness of the Lamy 2000 with a similar profile to the Lamy Accent (a little thicker). The Aion has a decent heft to it, without being overbearing. But it’s a really solid, all-metal pen. I remember when it first came out, and I had to have the one in silver. Available in fountain pen, rollerball, and ballpoint, I chose to only get the fountain pen and ballpoint.

Above all, there are many similarities to the Lamy pens you’re used to. Noteworthy is how the fountain pen takes the proprietary Lamy T10 cartridge and/or converter. The cap still has a friction fit cap closure system. Yet the steel nib is similar (but still different) than the other Lamy steel nibs. The Aion steel nib has a unique “tear-drop” shape, rather than the sharp, pointed angle of their regular steel nibs. It’s noteworthy that both fit on the Aion. Choose from: extra fine, fine, and medium. For this Deep Dark Blue color, I’d recommend filling it with Monteverde’s Jungle Hippo Dark Blue Bottled Ink.

Finally, the rollerball has the same friction fit cap closure system as the fountain pen. Yet it uses the Lamy M63 rollerball refills. The ballpoint has a smooth twist-action retraction mechanism. It’s easily activated with one hand since you twist the grip section. You can easily refill this with the Lamy M16 ballpoint refill or the Monteverde for Lamy ballpoint refills.
