Lamy pens are among the first pen brands that I ever collected. They always hold a special place in my heart. Although it’s considered a “beginner-friendly” pen, it enjoys a cult-like status from long-time pen enthusiasts worldwide. One of the reasons why the Safari continues to capture the attention of writers and thinkers is their yearly release of special edition colors. Their newest, the Lamy Al-Star Fiery And Aquatic Special Edition Pens, bring vibrant colors that live up to their names.

First of all, those who use the Lamy Al-Star appreciate the extraordinary lightness of its robust yet durable material. Its transparent grip also supplies a revealing look at the inner workings of the ink feed. The fountain pen comes in 7 nib sizes: Extra Fine, Fine, and Medium. The fountain pen uses Lamy Cartridges, or you can purchase the Z28 converter and fill the pen directly from a bottled ink color of your choice. Note that the fountain pen above has a slit in the barrel. This serves 2 purposes: 1) you’ll know which is the fountain pen vs. the rollerball, and even better, 2) the slit allows the user to see if there is any ink in the cartridge or converter. When either is getting close to empty, light comes through indicating a low level left… Pretty cool huh?

Finally, while this edition is also available in rollerball and ballpoint, those are by special order only. As an avid pen enthusiast, I must express how fun the ballpoint is to click. Its smooth click-action retraction is enhanced by the accordion-like rubber that contracts and expands as you click away. Refill the rollerball with Lamy M63 refills, and refill the ballpoint with Lamy M16 or Monteverde for Lamy ballpoint refills.
