National Day Of Pencils

National Day Of Pencils

Those of you who have read any of my reviews about pencils know that I’m a huge fan of them. Especially since I’m prone to making plenty of mistakes, having the ability to erase is particularly useful. Since we just had International Forest Day on March 21st, and National Day Of Pencils is tomorrow, March 30th, it’s appropriate to talk about the many great aspects of wood pencils now. I love how the market for higher quality wood pencils has expanded over the years. Now there are plenty of great options to fit every need.

First, National Day of Pencils is an older holiday. It dates back to the 1970’s. This great holiday provides a way to honor the age old writing instrument of the wooden pencil. Whether you use them to sketch, do rough drafts, practice handwriting, drawing, etc., wood pencils make their way into everyday life. And I still remember the first day of my math classes where the teacher/professor would explain we were only allowed to use pencil for our equations.

Importantly, many of the notable pencil companies are continually trying to reduce their impact on the environment. They search for better environmentally and socially friendly solutions to preserve the planet. For example, Faber-Castell sustainably manages their own pine forests.

Therefore, the first pencil I’d like to feature is the Graf von Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil. It’s one of the more amazing ones available because of how many features it’s packed with. Not only does the cap act as a pencil extender when the pencil gets too short to hold on its own, but also houses an effective built-in sharpener. The eraser is replaceable, and actually unscrews from the pencil itself. The pencil itself is available in a wide variety of color options.

Next up is the Blackwing Pencil collection. Everything from their everyday line of pencils to their limited editions is amazing. Its parent company, Cal Cedar is responsible for launching a line of eco-friendly products called ForestChoice. Much like the Perfect Pencil, Blackwing pencils also have easily replaceable erasers. This is noteworthy because most wooden pencils have a fixed eraser (and some have no eraser at all). Blackwing pencils are also available in a variety of graphite hardness and outer finishes.

Last but not least are Caran d’Ache wood pencils. These are carefully sourced from the highest quality woods in the Swiss Forests. They’re labeled as “Swiss Certified” wood, and show great respect for the environment. I love the infused scents into the wood. It’s definitely not a gimmick – the scented wood is amazing, and lingers on your hand for a brief while after use. These four-packs are extremely enjoyable to use, and are smooth to write with.
