Retro 51 Tornado Popper Herald
When I first started collecting pens as a kid (maybe 8-10 years old), I wasn’t a big fan of Retro 51 pens. I didn’t like the “bumpy” part on top of their ballpoints/capless rollerballs. From my youthful perspective, it appeared that the top stuck out too far from the barrel. Over the next couple years, my opinion of their pens changed greatly. I realize how much value is packed into such an everyday use pen. Retro 51 Tornado capless rollerballs are available in solid colors within their standard line, as well as special editions that have designs and patterns. Every quarter, Retro 51 releases an extra-special pen as a limited edition, called Poppers. Over the last several years, these limited edition Poppers have become more and more sought after. They all have unique themes. Therefore, I’m happy to present you with their newest – the Retro 51 Tornado Popper Herald.
First of all, the Retro 51 Tornado Popper Herald is themed to pay tribute to the famous newspaper “The Herald”. As such, this capless rollerball is a newspaper print grey. It’s a great start to the Poppers of 2021, as this is the first release of the year. Limited to 1951 pieces, this is a great collectible for sure.
Secondly, even though I call this pen a capless rollerball, it’s technically a ballpoint pen. With its smooth twist-action retraction mechanism, and its ability to take Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint or gel refills, it fits the definition. Yet, since Retro 51 Tornado pens are known for coming complete with Schmidt Short Capless rollerball refills, these pens are more commonly called capless rollerballs.
Importantly, the black and grey design is printed on a stainless steel barrel. The silver trim gives this limited edition an antique look. Also, notice the illustration of a globe on the cap disc. Did you notice the hidden messages all over the pen?
