Pelikan M1000 Raden White Ray Fountain Pen

I love Pelikan pens in general, as I mentioned in my review of the Pelikan Collector’s Book (see it here). Pelikan makes a fantastic quality writing instrument regardless of which mode you choose. However, the M1000 is the only size Pelikan pen I don’t have yet. It’s a rather large fountain pen, and it is so much fun to write with. The nib itself in the M1000 is also larger than the other Pelikan nibs (like in the M800, M600, and smaller). When I saw the Pelikan M1000 Raden White Ray Fountain Pen, I knew it was worth sharing with you all. Unlike most of my other reviews, this one is strictly informative. The reason it’s informative only is because the Pelikan M1000 Raden White Ray Fountain Pen is sold out (we sold out right away).

First of all, the Pelikan M1000 Raden White Ray Fountain Pen is a limited edition in the Souveran series. There were only 400 pieces produced worldwide. In case you’re unaware, this isn’t the first Raden in the M1000 size fountain pen. Pelikan made the Moonlight in 2011, Sunlight in 2013, Starlight in 2014, Sunrise in 2016, and the Green Ray in 2020. It seems like the new 2021 White Ray is a reimagining of the Green Ray.

Secondly, when a pen is labeled as “Raden”, it refers to a traditional Japanese art form. It’s used to add shimmering pieces of abalone shell to create unique pieces of hand-crafted designs. Urushi lacquer is applied before and after the abalone shell is affixed to the cap and barrel. This seals everything in place. Each pen is signed by the artist, and numbered by hand.

Finally, the Pelikan M1000 Raden White Ray Fountain Pen employs the traditional attributes of the M1000 standard editions. The high quality piston filling mechanism is ready to fill the larger barrel with plenty of ink to keep you writing. Also standard, the grip section is black. Overall, the pen has traditional gold trim. And the 18k gold nib is two-tone. This matches both the gold trim and the white abalone. The great thing about this larger size gold nib is how much softer it is to write with. There’s even a tiny bit of flex to it. All in all, an incredible value for an MSRP of $4200.
