Aging Room vs Cohiba Cuban
Normally this blog keeps to all things pen related, but I want to try something different this time! Here’s my review of a comparison between the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro and a Cuban cigar by Cohiba! A friend gave me both cigars since he knew I’m really into smoking nice cigars while drinking scotch or bourbon. He asked for my opinion on both, and which I like better. So, the competition of the Aging Room vs Cohiba Cuban began last Saturday evening.
While both cigars were enjoyable, the Aging Room is definitely the smoother smoke this time! I say “this time” because there are many variables that could’ve affected the Cohiba’s performance! Usually Cohiba, and especially a Cuban Cohiba, is a fantastic cigar that draws a smooth smoke!
I will say that in general, I have a hard time detecting and identifying flavors like many are able to! When people review cigars and talk about having hints of oakiness and subtle flavors of earthiness and notes of cocoa leaves or stuff like that, I always think how nice it must be for them to experience! But I can definitely see why the Aging Room Quattro won 2019’s cigar of the year!
To start, the Aging Room cigar is a Torpedo shape! I love the Torpedo and Perfecto shaped cigars because of the tapered cap! It makes it so much easier to cut the cap off with minimal chances of cutting off too much and unraveling the outer leaf wrapper! It was a very smooth smoke, which I attribute to having the leaves wrapped with just the right amount of tightness!
Even before lighting the cigar, I could easily draw air through the body! There were no noticeable blemishes, and seams, nor were there large veins on the wrapper! This also made it easier to cut without chance of unraveling!
About halfway through, the cigar started burning unevenly! I’m not sure what could cause this since there were no holes in the cigar, and the cap was cut evenly! Eventually it leveled out though! They say that the lighter grey the ash is, the better quality leaf it is! And this had a very light grey ash! They also say that the better quality it is, or the better it’s wrapped, the longer the ash can hang onto the cigar before having to “ash it” into the ashtray! This was a little too unstable to stay on, but did not detract from the overall experience!
I smoked the Cohiba second, and was immediately surprised by the difference in smoking it! First, the cap was small, so I used the punch cutter since I didn’t want to chance cutting off too much or cracking the wrapper! But I was happy when the punch cutter didn’t crack the cap either! To its credit, the Cohiba didn’t have any soft spots, veins, blemishes, or seams either on the wrapper!
This is definitely a well-made cigar! It was harder to draw in air before lighting, and the experience didn’t change after lighting! However, it wasn’t so tightly wrapped that I’d need to use a cigar poker to allow air through! It did produce a darker, thicker smoke than the Aging Room! And the ash was very dark, yet more stable! I definitely like not having to worry about the ash falling off at the wrong time, haha!
