Blackwing Spiral Notebook

What’s just as important as your writing instruments? The medium you use to write on. If you’re using your favorite pen to jot something down, but the paper you jot it down on is sub-par, then it takes away from enjoying using your pen. That’s why I’m always looking at different types of paper, in all different formats. There’s something special about Blackwing paper. Even though Blackwing paper is made with using their pencils in mind, it’s still fountain pen friendly. Enter the Blackwing Spiral Notebook.

First of all, the Blackwing Spiral Notebook is not new. However, just because it’s not new, doesn’t mean it’s not noteworthy and special. This is Blackwing’s take on the classic spiral-bound notebook. Notably, each A4 sized notebook features a black chipboard cover and a sturdy black wire spiral binding. I worry about the spiral binding wearing out on a notebook, but this feels like it won’t bend easily.

Secondly, the black chipboard cover feels so substantial that you know you can use it for writing on (rather than needing a desk or other solid surface for support). This is very dissimilar to other spiral notebooks that have such flimsy front and back covers.

In addition, inside you’ll find 160 pages of 80GSM paper that is available in blank, ruled, dot-grid, or graph formats. The 80GSM paper is great for using with all your favorite writing instruments. I tested it with pencil as well as fountain pens with double broad and italic nibs. There was no bleeding or ghosting or feathering. I say that’s very impressive. Interestingly, the pages aren’t perforated. However, the top right corners are rounded, while the bottom right corners are at a right angle. I don’t know why that is.

Finally, the notebook comes with an elastic strap and features the Blackwing “B” emblem debossed on its cover. The bottom line is that you’re getting tremendous value in this spiral notebook. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I’m enjoying mine. What will you use yours for?
