Blackwing Volume 6 Pencils

Bright colors with meaning and purpose behind it are extra special when attached to writing instruments. When we take a writing instrument and dress it up, it takes on a life of its own. Pencils in and of themselves are fun to use. Each mark made with the graphite, potentially temporary, gives a static-y feedback when drawn across the paper. Usually you know what to expect when writing with your pencil. The personality it takes on is inspiring for your writing. Blackwing knows exactly how to spice things up with its newest limited edition – the Blackwing Volume 6 Pencils.
Blackwing’s last limited edition box of 12 wooden pencils for 2020 takes on great meaning behind its theme. The neon red and neon blue (six of each per box) symbolizes the neon signs above small businesses around the world. Now more than ever, as big business giants take over a majority of sales, great emphasis is placed on smaller businesses that need the support of pencil users like us.
Importantly, its name, Blackwing Volume 6 Pencils, is a tribute to the six noble gases that give neon signs their distinct bright lights. Therefore, not only does this appeal to the supporter of small businesses in me, but also the chemist in me who loves incorporating mention of noble gases into this great design. This edition supports the “Small Business Relief Fund” who helps small businesses fight to keep those wonderfully bright lights on.
I’m so happy about this limited edition from Blackwing, because after many limited editions with various grades of graphite hardness, this one has soft graphite! At long last, I’ve been enjoying how smoothly these pencils glide across the paper. There’s such a huge difference between this and the harder graphite. The harder graphite pencils are known for making a lighter mark on the paper, and also being more brittle. What I love about the softer graphite is the opposite characteristics: the darker mark and strength. Each pencil also features a black ferrule, and black imprint that says “Blackwing 6”. Even the eraser holder is black. I also think it’s fun how they place the neon blue erasers in the red pencils, and the neon red erasers in the blue pencils for contrasted effect. Obviously, since the erasers are removable, you can make them match should you choose to do so.
