Caran d'Ache Nespresso Limited Edition 4 Ochre Fixpencil

Caran d’Ache makes some of the nicest pencils in the industry. When you think about all the writing instruments Caran d’Ache offers, their pencils need more attention. I’m definitely biased regarding Caran d’Ache pens and pencils because for over 10 years I consistently used their standard 849 green ballpoint every day at work. Their mechanisms are by far some of the smoothest around. That’s why I got really excited about the new Caran d’Ache Nespresso Limited Edition 4 Ochre Fixpencil. The previous collaborations between Caran d’Ache and Nespresso have all been ballpoints with wonderful colors and finishes.
First of all, I think Caran d’Ache went in the right direction with this one. I like that they made it a fixpencil. For those who are unfamiliar, a fixpencil has a few synonymous terms such as lead holder, clutch pencil, and sketch pencil. Sure the specs may vary a little between these names, but the concept is the same. I’ve included a picture of some of my other “fixpencils” as an example below. They’re usually gravity based (as is the case here), so as you press the button on top of the pencil, the graphite will extend easily depending on how steep of an angle you’re holding the pencil at.
Secondly, going back to the color, the Caran d’Ache Nespresso Limited Edition 4 Ochre Fixpencil is a beautiful coppery orange. I think the matte finish is perfect – especially as it matches the muted matte finish of Nespresso pods. The fun-factor of this limited edition is that these fixpencils are made with recycled Nespresso capsules. They show off the satin “ochre” color of the Cape Town Envivo Lungo capsules. Also, the graphite is made with 25% coffee grounds. Even the packaging is made of recycled and recyclable material.
Importantly, the thickness of the graphite is 2mm wide. This is great because it allows a wide range of use – everything from normal writing to drawing, sketching, and even filling in finer details in artwork. I also like how this thicker size makes it less likely for the graphite to break while you’re using it (like if you accidentally press too hard). Worried about sharpening the graphite? Not a problem with the built-in sharpener in the top button.
Finally, as I referenced the Caran d’Ache 849 series of pens and pencils, it’s noteworthy that this Caran d’Ache Nespresso Limited Edition 4 Ochre Fixpencil is the same size and shape. It’s a rather thin hexagonal profile, which I still find comfortable in the hand. Lastly, I love how the recycled aluminum hybrid material is very durable. Its appearance is made with a microbeading blasting process and electrochemical treatment.
