Conklin Duragraph Special Edition Rainbow Collection

Conklin is back at it, jumping into 2021 with a fresh new metallic look. While the Duragraph model itself is not new at all, originally being released in 1923, the new models revamp the line. It’s completely modernized with the current styles and trends in newer pens. The Conklin Duragraph Special Edition Rainbow Collection is an exciting addition to the line. As anodized rainbow finishes become even more popular (i.e. the Conklin Crescent Rainbow Fountain Pen, the Monteverde Engage, Rodeo Drive, Regatta, and Invincia, among other brands), this special edition rainbow pen raises the bar for the Duragraph yet again.

First, the Conklin Duraflex pens came on the scene as fun limited editions that introduced the Omniflex nib. Now, as this Conklin Duragraph Special Edition Rainbow Collection indicates in its name, it is a special edition. This means it’s not designated a limited number of pens made, and can continue to grow in popularity as there is such high demand. While the ballpoint is available now, the fountain pen will be available in February.

I got to play with the ballpoint for this review, and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it is. Fully expecting to hear the “creaking” of metal on metal when activating and retracting the smooth twist-action mechanism, I only felt the mechanism locking into place and extending the refill before returning it to hiding inside the pen. Of course, this takes my favorite Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint and gel refills, so there’s tons of customization with ink possible.

Importantly, I was also delighted to see that after handling the pen for a bit, there wasn’t a wall of graffiti fingerprints all over it. Sure, there were a few, but they were a lot more muted than I’d imagined. Speaking of the glossy rainbow surface, I like the attention to detail how the rainbow finish extends from the very top of the cap all the way down to the nose cone (minus the very tip of the pen). Another detail that’s good to know is how heavy this pen is. For an all-metal pen, I feel like it’s weighted appropriately. It’s not over-the-top way too heavy for use, and it’s not nearly as light as the resin Duragraph pens. I expect a pen like this to weigh heavier, and it delivers perfectly.

Last but not least, the fountain pen will be just as fun (if not more) to use. I’m thinking about all the possible color combinations of ink that can come out of this pen. Can you imagine Organics Studio’s Unicorn Blood coming out of the nib? Would you try and match this pen or contrast it with your ink choice? Keep in mind you still have the usual nib options of extra fine, fine, medium, broad, stub, and Omniflex.
