Conklin Endura Limited Edition Abalone Pen Collection
Glamorous. Glitzy. Fashionable. These are all words that can be used to describe the new Conklin Endura Limited Edition Abalone Pen Collection. Firstly, the Conklin Endura is an older model, dating back to its original release in 1924. After that, much like the Conklin Duragraph (see my review here), the Endura has undergone several generations of revamping. Fitted with a lever propelled filling system in the beginning, you had the option of bottled ink only. Color choices were deep and rich, varying between the typical solid colors or slightly marbled colors of that time period. Over time, the lever filling system was dropped in favor of the modernized international size cartridge/converter filling system still used today. Still keeping a wide range of marbled color options, these modern Endura pens are made with resin.
Personally, I’m not a fan of Abalone. I’ve never liked the look on pens (or anything, really). However, I appreciate that other fellow pen enthusiasts enjoy Abalone on their pens. Moreover, I can see how people find it lovely to look at, and how it swirls the colors reflected in different lighting environments. Therefore, I appreciate the hard work that goes into crafting such a pen. It takes a meticulous attention to detail. And in the Conklin Endura Limited Edition Abalone Pen Collection, it’s accented perfectly with Rose Gold. In addition, I do love Rose Gold in general, as well as on the accents and grip section of this pen.
Importantly, this pen uses the highly iridescent inner layer of authentic Abalone shell from New Zealand. While it’s traditionally used in decorative items, jewelry, buttons, and inlays in furniture and musical instruments, I’ve also seen Abalone shell used in various pen models over the years. Notably, the deep swirl of blue, green, purple, cream, and pink hues is what attracts many to this material. Hand turned and hand polished, this enhances the colors reflected.
Finally, the Conklin Endura Abalone is limited in production to 1898 pieces. It is available in both fountain pen and ballpoint. The fountain pen uses the high-quality steel JoWo nibs, and is filled via cartridge/converter. Choose from extra fine, fine, medium, broad, stub, and Omniflex. The ballpoint uses a smooth twist-action retraction. Choose from a wide range of ballpoint or gel refills with the Monteverde Parker Style refills.
