Cross Century II Pen Collection

Cross Century II Pen Collection

A.T. Cross Company has a long, rich history having been around since 1846. Did you know A.T. Cross (or more commonly, just Cross pens) has been headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island for all these years? Not only are Cross pens known for making great corporate gifts as well as graduation and Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts, they’ve also been passed down from generation to generation as heirlooms. Their pens have also been traditionally used in public signings by many U.S. presidents over the years. Regarding the most recent election, President Biden used the Cross Century II Black Rollerball. In general, the Cross Century II Pen Collection makes a great everyday writer. I certainly love mine.

First, the Cross Century II Pen Collection is available in three modes: fountain pen, rollerball, and ballpoint. Cross used to have amazing .9mm mechanical pencils many, many years ago. Then they changed it to a .5mm mechanism. After phasing those out, then you could alter your ballpoint pen by switching the refill out with a Switch-It pencil mechanism. Now, unfortunately, there is no pencil option.

Importantly, for the fountain pen, it uses Cross’ proprietary cartridge and converter filling system. Also notable is the nib. It’s available as a steel nib only, with fine and medium point sizes to choose from. I love how smooth and consistent the Cross Century II fountain pen writes. Both the fountain pen and rollerball use a friction-fit cap closure system.

The rollerball uses Cross’ proprietary rollerball refills (available in black and blue ink). As for available finishes, the fountain pen and rollerball are available in 12 unique color choices: 10k Gold Filled, Medalist Chrome (which means having a chrome barrel with gold plated trim), Lustrous Chrome, Black Lacquer, Blue Lacquer, Sterling Silver, White Lacquer, Plum Lacquer, Gunmetal Gray, Black Micro-Knurl, Translucent Green Lacquer, and Translucent Cobalt Blue Lacquer.

The ballpoint has the most versatility with the option of using either Cross’ proprietary ballpoint refills in black or blue ink, or you can refill with Monteverde for Cross ballpoint refills. The advantage of using Monteverde’s refill here is a wide range of color options and point sizes. In a medium point, you can choose from: black, blue, blue/black, red, green, turquoise, pink, orange, purple, and brown. Wow, talk about choices. In a broad point, choose from black or blue. It’s important to mention how smooth the twist-action retraction is with these ballpoints. The ballpoint is also available in the same 12 unique color choices as the other modes. In addition to the ones mentioned previously, the ballpoint has the unique color of a Pearlescent White Lacquer. There’s also the option of getting the Lustrous Chrome with your choice of five emblems: Fire Fighter, EMS, Police Officer, M.D., and R.N..
