Cross Peerless 125 Pen Collection

Here’s a fantastic pen series that’s flown under the radar for the most part. You’ve heard of the company before. In fact, it’s probably one of the more well-known pen companies even among non-pen users. That’s right – A.T. Cross is the one I’m referring to. They have so many wonderful writing instruments. For example, the Classic Century is traditionally given as a graduation gift or a Bar/Bat Mitzvah gift. Not to mention the larger size Cross Townsend collection. The Townsend is a nicely weighted, mid-sized pen that has come in many colors and finishes over the years. By far, it’s one of my favorite pens from Cross. Now, enter the Cross Peerless 125 Pen Collection.

Notably, there’s plenty of history with this series. The original Cross Peerless was released in 1889. Therefore the introduction of the Cross Peerless 125 Pen Collection celebrates the brand’s rich history. It pays tribute to the original design, while modernizing it for today’s market. However, unlike the original, each mode is equipped with a Swarovski crystal embedded in the cap. Currently, the Peerless is offered in Quartz Blue, Obsidian Black, Titanium Grey, and 23k Gold Plate finishes.

The Peerless is exactly as its name implies – without equal. And it’s in a league of its own for so many reasons. First (and easiest), is the gift-ability. It’s a massive pen, and you get so much “bang for the buck”. Whether you enjoy using the fountain pen, rollerball, or ballpoint (sorry, no mechanical pencils), these larger size writing instruments are truly impressive. Also, the gift box it’s housed in makes for great presentation. But whether it’s a gift for someone else, or a gift for yourself, the value is there.

The fountain pen is packed with features. The cap twists off, revealing an appropriately large size 18k gold nib. And a largely unknown fact is that the nib is unofficially made by Sailor, so you know it’s an awesome writer. Therefore, you also have a wider range of nib options than usual. In addition to extra fine, fine, medium, and broad, you can also choose a zoom nib. It’s similar to a stub nib, if that helps for reference. Unfortunately, it still uses the smaller capacity proprietary Cross cartridges and converter. At least that means you can rotate through your favorite inks more frequently.

The rollerball is actually quite fun to write with. I like the even weight distribution along the barrel since I never post the cap when writing. The Cross rollerball refill is also really enjoyable. I find it to be one of the smoothest writing rollerball refills around. As long as you don’t mind the one point size option of medium, it’s a dream to use.

Finally, the ballpoint is amazing. It takes the standard Cross ballpoint refills, available in fine, medium, and broad. But what makes it so amazing is the mechanism and the overall weight. This ballpoint has a smooth the twist mechanism is as it activates and retracts the point. The cap is larger than the barrel, so I also enjoy how it makes the pen a little bit back-heavy. While that sounds unbalanced, it actually sits quite nicely in the hand. I can’t do enough justice in trying to describe how wonderful this all-metal pen is.
