Yee haw, folks! You don’t have to saddle up and head out West to get your hands on this golden treasure. I’m excited to share a pen collection that has its roots tied to American history. Back in 1858, Richard Esterbrook set up shop on the east coast just as the famous Gold Rush ended. Spanning from 1848 to 1855, prospectors made the trek across country to California in search of gold. Approximately 300,000 people made that journey in hopes of striking it big. Unlike the gold rush of 1858, you can simply use modern technology to get your hands on the newest special edition Esterbrook Estie Gold Rush Collection.
True to Esterbrook’s roots, the Esterbrook Estie Gold Rush Collection pays homage to Richard Esterbrook’s great beginning during such an historic time. Initially being released in two amazing colors, Prospector Black and Purple Dreamer, the Estie pen collection strikes gold yet again with this winner.
First of all, these colors are limited in production. Even though it’s called Prospector Black, you’ll see beautiful shimmering swirls of gold specks mixed in with the black resin. In addition, the Purple Dreamer is exactly that – dreamy. The darker purple resin is mixed in with the same shimmering golden swirls as its sibling.
Secondly, it’s important to note that this is the first Estie limited edition that’s available in oversize fountain pen as well as standard size, rollerball, and ballpoint. I love all these options of writing modes available for personalization.
Starting with the fountain pen, the oversize version is massively impressive. The standard size is slender and wonderful to hold. In other words, I love how comfortably both versions fit in the hand. The Gold Rush fountain pen boasts a wide range of nib options: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and 1.1 stub. For instance, I can imagine filling the Prospector Black with Monteverde’s Smoke Noir ink, while the Purple Dreamer sounds like Monteverde’s Purple Reign would look best in it. These fountain pens use a standard international size cartridge/converter filling system.
Both the fountain pen and rollerball have a cushion cap closure system, which keeps the ink and refill air tight. It also creates a smooth opening and closing action. The rollerball uses Schmidt 888 or 5888 rollerball refills. Moreover, the ballpoint operates with a smooth twist-action retraction mechanism. As usual, I recommend using Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint or gel refills.
