Faber-Castell E-Motion Pen Collection
Share
Every week I rotate out the pens I use to make room for more. I was about to do my daily journaling when I realized I really wanted to use pens made of wood for it. After perusing through my various pens, I decided the perfect series for the job is my Faber-Castell E-Motion Pen Collection. Faber-Castell pens and pencils are among the few brands that I trust with making quality wooden writing instruments. The E-Motion immediately felt right at home in my hand. I filled my fountain pen for journaling, and pulled my ballpoint and pencil out for taking quick notes with during the week. Note that the pictures below of my personal Faber-Castell E-Motion Pen Collection include colors/finishes that are long discontinued.
The Faber-Castell E-Motion Pen Collection is currently available in seven finishes: Brown Wood with Polished Chrome, Dark Brown Wood with Polished Chrome, Black Wood with Polished Chrome, Crocodile Black Resin, Parquet Black Resin, Pure Black, and Pure Silver. My top three color choices are the Brown Wood, the Black Wood, and the Pure Black. I’m definitely not a fan of the Crocodile and Parquet Black Resin patterns.
First of all, these feel fantastic to write with. The E-Motion is available in all four modes of writing: fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint, and mechanical pencil. I love using each mode for different reasons. Yet, importantly, one reason I love the E-Motion that ties across all types of writing instrument is the clip. Whether you appreciate a good clip or not, the Faber-Castell E-Motion clips are epic. They use a spring-loaded system which is easy to activate one-handed. There are “notched teeth” in the clip that helps keeping your pen gripped to your shirt pocket (or wherever you’ve attached it). No longer do you need to worry about your writing instrument sliding out.
Don’t let the overall size of the nib fool you on the fountain pen. Its smaller size still packs a powerful punch as your fountain pen delivers a consistent line of ink across the paper (regardless of nib size). Available in extra fine, fine, medium, and broad, these nibs are all delightful to use. As for the filling system, this fountain pen uses an international size cartridge/converter filling system.
All that’s left is choosing which color ink to use. I’d recommend the Graf von Faber-Castell Hazelnut Brown (one of my favorite browns) to match the Brown Wood and Dark Brown Wood finish. For the black finishes (Black Wood, Crocodile Black, Parquet Black, and Pure Black), I recommend contrasting with a fun color like the Graf von Faber-Castell Moss Green. Last but not least, the Pure Silver finish would look great with the Graf von Faber-Castell Cobalt Blue coming out of it.
Noteworthy of both the fountain pen and the rollerball is the cap. It doesn’t post on the back of the pen well. This doesn’t deter me since I never post the cap on my pens, but I realize it’s a significant detail to many. The threads around the grip section are metal, while the threads in the cap are part of the plastic. I love how snug it feels when I twist open and close the cap. The rollerball uses Schmidt 888 or 5888 rollerball refills.
The ballpoint uses a small knob at the top of the pen for smooth twist-action retraction. You can refill it easily with Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint or gel refills. The mechanical pencil is easily a favorite of mine with its propelling lead mechanism. It’s so easy to continuously rotate clockwise to extend the lead, and counter-clockwise to retract. I love its use of the larger 1.4mm lead. The eraser is a “real eraser”, meaning it’s not some tiny, flimsy eraser that many mechanical pencils have. It’s also easy to replace. And unlike most mechanical pencils, storage of spare lead isn’t directly underneath the eraser. Instead, you can find it hidden in the barrel by unscrewing the grip section. This definitely appeals to the “tech-y gadget lover” in me.
