As far as pocket pens go, there are many options to choose from. The size of your pen definitely matters depending on where you need to store it. If you use a pen case, then it’s not as essential to concern yourself with that. But storing in your pocket or purse gets a lot easier with a slim and compact pen. Therefore, let’s explore the Fisher Space Pen ballpoint. This isn’t so much of a review of one pen as it is just talking about a company overall.
First of all, here’s a little background to the Fisher Space Pen ballpoint, and the Fisher Space Pen company itself. Its founder, Paul C. Fisher, revolutionized the pen industry and brought the Fisher Space Pen company to fame. He accomplished this through many ways. One was introducing the first completely sealed and pressurized ballpoint refill. This famous refill launched into space in 1967/1968, and goes on every NASA manned space flight since.
Secondly, did you know that Fisher Space Pen has a permanent exhibit inside the Apollo/Saturn V Center at the Kennedy Space Center? Fisher Space Pen is also on display at the New York Museum of Modern Art. It’s even been on Seinfeld! As if that’s not fascinating enough, did you know that Paul Fisher ran for president of the U.S. at one point?
Importantly, Fisher Space Pen is a family owned company based right here in the United States. There aren’t too many of those around. The Fisher Space Pen ballpoint is also utilized on the International Space Station. It’s also used by Russian and Chinese space programs.
As a pen that went to the moon, it’s noteworthy to understand what makes this pen and refill so special. The refill is patented as a sealed and pressurized refill that writes anywhere (on any surface), and in any condition. What that means is not only will it work in space, but also underwater, upside down, and in extreme temperatures. Fisher Space Pen states that the refill works in the extreme temperatures ranging from -30 degrees Fahrenheit to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. It also writes on glossy surfaces and even over grease. Lasting three times longer than the average pen, the Fisher Space Pen refill also has an estimated 100 year shelf life.
Finally, as for the pens themselves, there are two models that are most famous: the Bullet and the AG-7. The Bullet model brings us back to my introduction in this blog (regarding size). It’s such a compact pen that fits perfectly in the pocket or purse. To make it full length, post the cap on the back of the barrel. While we mainly carry their most popular colors (Brushed Chrome, Chrome, Matte Black, Raw Brass, and Black Titanium Nitride), they still have dozens more colors and patterns. Fisher Space Pen Bullet pens don’t come with a clip, but those are purchased separately. The AG-7 is a shiny, polished chrome ballpoint. This, too, is available in many color options. As a full sized pen, it comes with a clip built in. To activate it, you click the top. To retract it, you click the side button. As a side note, this is very fun to fidget with.
Well folks, I’m off next week, so this is the last blog of the year. It’s time to wish you all a merry Christmas and happy, healthy New Year! See you in January!
