Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche Black Edition

Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche Black Edition

If you think about it, Graf von Faber-Castell is a company that’s not only rich in history, but also makes an incredibly wide range of writing instruments and art supplies. Their everyday use products are branded Faber-Castell, while the higher end products are branded Graf von Faber-Castell. This important distinction helps identify the “cream of the crop” so to speak. Regardless of which subdivision you explore, they only make quality stuff. In the Graf line, there are so many fun pens and pencils to explore. Most recently is the new Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche Black Edition pen collection.

First of all, the Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche Black Edition is unique to the Guilloche Collection because it’s entirely black. In addition to using dark high-density resin with the special guilloche engraving process, the metal parts are all made with titanium PVD coating. The clip is a solid spring-loaded clip. Not only does it flawlessly hold your pen in place, but it’s also fun to play with by pulling it and letting it snap back into place.

Secondly, the Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche Black Edition is only available in fountain pen, rollerball, and ballpoint. It’s a shame that there’s no mechanical pencil option in the Black Edition. As the cap on the fountain pen and rollerball are friction fit, it fits snugly and securely on both ends of the pen.

Thirdly, the fountain pen uses an international size cartridge/converter filling system. I would fill the fountain pen with Monteverde’s Smoke Noir ink. This darker grey ink would look wonderful coming out of this fountain pen. Importantly, the nib is extra special. It’s hand-inscribed, and has a ruthenium coating over the 18k gold nib. As for nib sizes, you can choose from: extra fine, fine, medium, and broad.

Finally, the rollerball and ballpoint are nothing to sneeze at. The rollerball is a great option for everyday use. It refills with Schmidt 888 or 5888 refills. The ballpoint has smooth twist-action retraction. It’s refillable with Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint or gel refills. But I really like that it comes with their Faber-Castell branded Parker Style ballpoint refill in a smooth broad point.
