Kaweco Special Blue Pen Collection

Kaweco Special Blue Pen Collection

What happens when you combine precision German engineering and mechanical likeness into a pen? You get the Kaweco Special series. Actually, I feel like most of the Kaweco series falls under this description in general. Comprised of fountain pen, ballpoint, and mechanical pencil in .5mm, .7mm, .9mm, and 2.0mm graphite thickness, this is a very varied collection. Starting off with the brass and the black finishes, the newest Kaweco Special Blue Pen Collection follows their success. Pardoning the word repetition, the Kaweco Special Blue is a special edition. This means that once these pens are gone from a limited stock – they are gone.

I love a pen that comes standard with a clip, but unfortunately most Kaweco writing instruments (including this one) do not. Yet, since the Kaweco Special pens retain an octagonal shape, they won’t roll away from you. There seems to be an optical illusion with this pen: it looks longer than it is. That’s probably due to how thin it is, being thinner than most pens. But in reality, the Kaweco Special is a very average length.

The Kaweco Special Blue pen collection is a really nice dark blue finish. It’s on an aluminum barrel, so it’s definitely lighter than the brass version. And the sleek simplicity of the pen gives it a minimalistic look overall. I’m glad they chose to use modernized chrome accents versus the more traditional gold accents for this look. I think even cooler would be rose gold accents, but hey, we take what we can get.

The fountain pen uses the same nib that’s on the Kaweco Sport (and most of their fountain pens). This is great for interchangeability. It also means you know you’re getting the same great-writing nib that you’re used to. Employing an international cartridge/converter filling system means using your favorite inks across the board. The metal threads on the back of the barrel means securely holding the cap in place if you choose to post your cap. Also, an important feature is the little rubber ring between the grip section and the barrel. This helps prevent your pen from drying out quickly.

The ballpoint is fun because of the click-action retraction mechanism. With such a big button on top, I’d be clicking it all day. You can feel the quality mechanism as you click away. Another great detail is that you can use the Monteverde Parker Superbroad ballpoint refills in it. Unlike the smaller Kaweco Sport ballpoint that only uses multipoint refills, this one has more options.

Ahhh, now for my favorite part – the mechanical pencil! The .5mm and .7mm are fairly standard graphite size options. However, the .9mm and 2.0mm thicker graphite options are my preferred choice. They are all wonderful to use and are all equipped with high quality, smooth-action click mechanisms. You can clearly feel a secured “kachink” with each click. While the 2.0mm pencil doesn’t have a built-in eraser, the others do. It’s a tiny eraser, made for precision erasing needs.
