Kaweco Sport Black Crystal Fountain Pen

Kaweco Sport Black Crystal Fountain Pen

The Kaweco Sport is a favorite pocket-sized pen of many writers. Compact in design, the Sport comes in many finishes with variations in material as well. There’s the Classic Sport, Skyline Sport, Frosted Sport, Al-Sport, Brass Sport, Steel Sport, and the AC-Sport. First, the Classic Sport is a completely resin pen with gold plated trim. Second, the Skyline Sport is made of resin like the Classic, but has silver trim. Third is the Frosted Sport, which has more pastel colors and is slightly translucent. Fourth is the Al-Sport, which is made of aluminum in many different anodized colors. The Brass and Steel Sport is self-explanatory (made of brass and steel). Last but not least is the AC-Sport, which is made of carbon fiber with anodized aluminum. With such a popular collection, limited editions sell out fast. That’s why I’m so excited about the Kaweco Sport Black Crystal Fountain Pen.

A popular trend is pen exclusives or limited editions. When you can only get a small batch of a pen, people want it so much more (it seems). We are lucky to get two in a row – two Kawecos that are exclusive to the U.S. market only. First is the Kaweco Sport Black Crystal Fountain Pen (with only 1000 pieces made), and next is going to be the Kaweco Al-Sport Golden Espresso fountain pen (look for my review on the Golden Espresso as soon as it’s released because you know I’m getting one for myself) with only 700 pieces made. The Black Crystal is so cool that I had to have it right away. And I snagged a double broad nib (the black coating matches the trim and clip), so all the ink will come out in a very thick line.

Unlike other Kawecos, this comes complete in a special matching black gift tin. Inside the tin is a Kaweco sticker, a pack of black cartridges, the pen. But importantly, also unlike other Kawecos, this comes with the slide converter, and a matching black clip. Usually you’d have to buy these separately. The words “Kaweco Sport” and “Black Crystal” are on the cap in matching black to keep with the theme. I like how the overall look reminds me of a crystal skull that you sometimes see in movies.

Let’s talk nibs. For such a small pen, you sure do get a ton of choices in the special, matching all-black coated steel nib. This pen is available in extra fine, fine, medium, and broad.

Finally, this fountain pen is a “crystal clear” demonstrator. As I’ve mentioned before, I truly love seeing the inner mechanics of my pens. While the converter is so small that you don’t get to fully see the ink sloshing around inside your pen like with piston or vacuum fillers, it’s still such a fun look. And the Black Crystal coming out around the Halloween season feels totally appropriate. Now, there’s just the remaining question of what ink to fill it with. I think the Monteverde Mercury Noir ink is great for the occasion.
