Krone Houdini Limited Edition Fountain Pen

Krone Houdini Limited Edition Fountain Pen

First of all, happy Thanksgiving to all my pen friends and pen family! This is the first installment of my new “Blast From The Past” series of blog reviews. Once or twice per month I plan on revisiting and reviewing “greatest hits” from pens long ago. Everything from limited editions to regular pens that deserve special mention are included. As you may or may not be familiar with Krone pens, they are a U.S. company (based in Chicago, IL) known for extravagant, uniquely themed limited editions. Each limited edition pen comes with a twist. For example, the Krone Einstein L.E. has an actual mathematical symbol handwritten by Einstein himself embedded in the cap. The Krone Marilyn Monroe L.E. has a piece of her lipstick in the cap. So, the Krone Houdini Limited Edition Fountain Pen does not disappoint with its magical beauty.

I’ve always been a fan of limited edition pens that go the extra mile with its theme. Firstly, Krone does exactly that with the Houdini fountain pen. They got a small amount of the famous keys that Houdini was most known for using in his escape acts from a famous lock & key collector in Ohio. After verifying their provenance, the keys were too few to leave in their original condition for each collector to enjoy on a pen. Therefore, Krone “reduced the keys to a magic powder”, and are incorporated into the Sterling Silver Clip on each fountain pen.

Secondly, the Krone Houdini Limited Edition Fountain Pen is very limited in production. There were only 588 pens made in Sterling Silver. Even more rare are the 18 pens made in white gold, and the eight pens made in platinum. Importantly, of the 588 silver pens, 118 of them have an actual original authenticated Houdini key (not just the powder in the pen’s clip). All of the white gold and platinum pens have one as well. I think that’s a really neat piece of history to have a chance at owning. Also, the push-button filling system is really convenient and easy to use. Having a few of these Krones myself, I can attest to how quick and easy it is to fill a pen like this.

Moreover, a pen as mighty as this gets Krone’s two-toned 18k gold nib. Originally available in fine, medium, and broad, this is one great writer. The nib is engraved with Krone’s name. Speaking of engravings, Houdini’s portrait is engraved in Sterling Silver on top of the cap. Framing his portrait is a chain and padlock also in Sterling Silver. Lastly, each pen comes with a black lacquered, magic, Houdini draw box. What makes it a magic box? Upon opening and closing the box, it gives the illusion of the pen appearing and disappearing.
