Laban Skeleton Pen Collection
There are two types of pens that I find to be extra fascinating and enjoyable to look at. The first type is a demonstrator, where the pen is completely see-through. For the sake of simplification, I’m including translucent pens in that “demo” category. The second type is a skeleton, where the pen is still mostly transparent. Usually there’s a clear resin cap and barrel underneath a metal overlay. Having different shapes and designs in the metal overlay “skeleton” is part of what makes these so cool. In addition, using different materials for the metal part is alluring. Therefore when I saw the Laban Skeleton Pen Collection, I was immediately drawn to it.
First of all, I find it so fun to be able to see all the inner mechanics and mechanisms in demonstrator and skeleton pens in general. The Laban Skeleton Pen Collection is no different in captivating my attention. To fill this fountain pen, you use an international size cartridge or converter. I love seeing the ink inside the converter without having to open the barrel. It’s also enjoyable to see the nib and grip section of the fountain pen, and the entire grip and front section of the rollerball just sitting inside the cap waiting to be used. Unfortunately, no ballpoint is available. I would absolutely love to see a Skeleton ballpoint in this collection.
Secondly, there are four types of finishes coating the brass Skeleton overlay. Following recent popular trends in pen finishes, there’s a Rainbow version. The grip section is also coated in the Rainbow finish, which is a nice touch to complete the look. In fact, each of the four finishes has a matching grip section. Very classy and elegant overall. Next up is the more subdued Gunmetal finish. I like this one as an understated matte coating. A Silver finish is available as well if you prefer a lighter tone on your metal overlay. Last but not least is the Rose Gold finish. I’d have to say that both the Gunmetal and Rose Gold finishes are my favorites. All except for the Gunmetal are shiny and give off a brilliant luster.
Finally, the Laban Skeleton Pen Collection is perfectly weighted. It’s not too heavy from the brass overlay, but not too light from the resin underneath. I like the mid-size “perfecto” cigar shape as well (where it’s tapered on both ends). I also tested posting the cap on the back, and it fits nice and snug without scratching the finish when removing the cap after use. The fountain pen is available in a smooth, high-quality steel nib. Choose from: extra fine, fine, medium, and broad. The rollerball uses Schmidt 888 or 5888 refills. It’s important to clarify that the pens you see in my pictures are an example, but the rollerball doesn’t come with an extra fine point like the one I’m using.
