Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel Ballpoint Pen

Leuchtturm1917 is mainly a paper/stationery company. They were founded in 1917, and are based in Germany. Known for their high quality notebooks and planners, they keep innovating with new designs, colors, and trends. I even wrote about their A5 Hardcover Notebook here. In keeping with inspiring writers everywhere, Leuchtturm1917 just released their first pen – a ballpoint. The Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel ballpoint pen is a very casual, everyday pen. This is a revival of the Drehgriffel from the 1920’s. And yes, it is a new pen, but they don’t market it as such. They market it as the pen’s name, “Drehgriffel”, which directly translates as “twist stylus”. But don’t let the name fool you because it’s really still a ballpoint.
The Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel ballpoint pen does have a little knob on top of the pen, which is really fun to twist. It even has little ridges to provide a better grip when twisting. Activating and retracting the Parker Style refill (we recommend the Monteverde Superbroad ballpoint) is great for fidgeting with. Luckily it’s a quality spring-loaded mechanism to withstand all the twisting. Not to gloss past the refill too quickly, this is a great feature that it still takes a Parker Style refill. Usually a thinner, smaller pen like this will use a specialized refill. It’s 5.11” long, and it’s a little less than 3/8” wide. The width is hard to imagine, but it’s safe to say that this pen is small enough that it will fit into your pen loops on journals and organizers that have pen loops rather easily.
One thing very important to note is this pen doesn’t have a clip. It’s great for the pants pocket or purse or desk, but not for wearing in a shirt pocket. At least this way there’s nothing to detract from the streamlined look of the pen. The hexagonal body also helps act as a roll-stop, so the Drehgriffel won’t roll off your desk.
The Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel ballpoint pen is also really durable. Made from precision-milled aluminum and brass, this thing can really take a beating. The metal is then painted and sealed with your choice of nine different colors: Bellini, Black, Denim, Lemon, Nordic Blue, Powder, Red, Sage, and White. Lots of great colors for the barrel, and I like the contrasting nose cone and twist mechanism color.
