The Montegrappa Elmo Fantasy Bloom Collection is the latest in the Elmo series of pens. First of all, I’m a huge fan of Montegrappa pens in general. They have so many impressive pens in their lineup. From their “everyday carry” pens to their limited editions, they make quality writing instruments. As an older company (since 1912), they have plenty of experience with innovation and creativity.
Originally, the Elmo 01 is created as homage to the style of one of Montegrappa’s co-founders: Heinrich “Elmo” Helm. The first Elmo pens from the 1920’s are contemporary in design and practicality. Portability, reliability, and efficiency reflect the motto of the time. Now, as simplicity is appreciated more and more, the Elmo 01 answers the call for the same needs as in the past. In this spirit of simplicity, the Elmo 01 is offered in one finish – black resin with stainless steel appointments. Its design is comprised of a very sleek and streamlined cap and barrel.
Now, the Montegrappa Elmo Fantasy Bloom collection introduces three gorgeous colors to the same modern design of the Elmo 01. The “Blue Cross Gentian”, “Iris Yellow”, and “Black Star Calla Lily” (my favorite as I’m biased toward anything green) are the pearlised resin finishes. Montegrappa brings these stunning colors to the Bauhaus-era Elmo 01.
The Blue Cross Gentian, firstly, contains blue and purple swirls that are reminiscent of a cross between the darker depths of the ocean, and the bewildering expanse of the cosmos.
The Iris Yellow is such a bright and cheerful yellow finish that the darker black swirls reign in and bring a nice balance to the pen. One thing is certain – as a result it shows such a lovely, Summery look to it.
Last but not least in the Montegrappa Fantasy Bloom collection is the Black Star Calla Lily. Because it’s mostly a deeper emerald green, this also features some darker (almost black) swirls with trace amounts of tiny red swirls throughout. This reminds me of the dense jungle forest, for instance.
The Montegrappa Elmo Fantasy Bloom collection is available as a fountain pen, rollerball, and ballpoint pen. The fountain pen offers plenty of nib sizes to choose from to fit your style: Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, and Stub 1.1, Stub 1.5. The nib is a steel nib, and uses a cartridge/converter filling system. The rollerball mirrors the same profile as the fountain pen. And the ballpoint uses a Parker Style refill (we recommend the Monteverde Superbroad ballpoint refill). It also uses a smooth twist-action retraction mechanism. I like how the body tapers down with a minimal change in width.
Overall, the Montegrappa Elmo Fantasy Bloom collection is such a winner. It’s a fantastic everyday writer.
