Narwhal Key West Fountain Pen
While Bert is away at the Miami Pen Show, I think it’s fitting to make today’s review about the new Narwhal Key West Fountain Pen. Here’s a little background on the Narwhal company, just in case you’re not familiar yet. Narwhal is a fountain pen company that strives to create the perfect fusion of art and writing instruments. They debuted at the 2019 DC Pen Show, and feature fountain pens with all parts made entirely in-house. Yes, even the nib is made by Narwhal. With their name, Narwhal, it’s no surprise that many of their pens are aquatic-themed.
First of all, the Narwhal Key West Fountain Pen is available in two distinct colors: Islamorada and Key Largo. Islamorada looks tan, just like the color of sand. I can easily see filling this pen with Monteverde’s Jungle Ink in Lion Yellow. On the other hand is the deep sea blue colored Key Largo. To match that, I’d use Monteverde’s Capri Blue ink.
Notably, both colors stand out. So if you’re looking for an understated or muted pen, this isn’t the one for you. Here’s why: glitter. These pens sparkle like crazy. The Key West collection is made of a colorful, glittery resin. The resin doesn’t embed the glitter deep inside, but rather keeps it just under the surface so you can enjoy every sparkly bit of that glitter as it reflects the light. Importantly, the surface of the pen is smooth. When I first opened the boxes and saw these pens, I thought there would be a bit of texture. Yet thankfully that wasn’t the case.
Speaking of cases, I’m very impressed with the re-usable leather case included with each fountain pen. It has a secure snap enclosure system, and creates a beautiful presentation. It rests inside a sturdy cardboard gift box.
Additionally, Narwhal’s in-house nib is wonderful. It’s smooth, and ink flows without issue consistently. Available as a #6 size in fine and medium, their steel nib packs a lot of quality and value. The included international size converter makes it easy to fill from your favorite bottle of ink.
Finally, the Narwhal Key West fountain pen is comfortable to hold in your hand. It’s a fantastic mid-size and mid-weight fountain pen that balances nicely. The closed cap and barrel taper nicely on both ends to create symmetry. And the clip is springy yet very sturdy, which is a characteristic I value a lot.
