Otto Hutt Design 06 Collection

What’s in a name? Everything. We place great importance on what we call things. We get upset when people misspell/mispronounce our names. When it comes to products, the right name makes it more appealing and influences decision making. I was semi-recently introduced to the brand Otto Hutt. After seeing the model names of their pens, I wasn’t too enthusiastic. Like I said, everything is in a name. So, when I saw all their pen models have names like Design 01, Design 02, Design 03, etc., I thought it would be bland. Then I did some research, and I saw the pens in person. Despite such boring names, these pens are plenty to be excited about. I really like the Design 04 (they remind me of Graf von Faber-Castell pens), and I got to review the Otto Hutt Design 06 Collection.

I was surprised to learn that Otto Hutt has been around for over 100 years. It was founded in 1920 by Karl Hutt. As the company has been handed down from Karl to his son Otto Hutt, the brand name makes more sense to me now. Since it’s a family company, it’s no surprise that Otto’s siblings Marco Frei, and Nicole Klingel are also in charge.

With great attention to detail, the Otto Hutt Design 06 Collection is available in fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint. First, the fountain pen is so impressive. I thought it was going to be just another average steel nib, but this glides across paper with no resistance. I tested it using Rhodia paper, which as we know is a bit glossy. However, this nib truly stands apart on its own regardless of the paper used. And the feed carried quite a bit of ink after only dipping. The nibs are available in extra fine, fine, medium, and broad. As for ink choice, Otto Hutt fountain pens use an international cartridge/converter filling system.

I didn’t test the rollerball, but it has the same body as the fountain pen. Also, it uses Schmidt 888 or 5888 rollerball refills, so you don’t have to worry about needing a proprietary refill. Both the fountain pen (and therefore the rollerball as well) are comfortable to hold in the hand. These all-metal pens are perfectly weighted and balanced whether you post the cap or not.

The ballpoints employ a smooth twist-action retraction mechanism. This makes it easy for one-handed use. Also, the refills used are Parker Style. As usual, I recommend my favorite Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint or gel refills. The broad blue gel would look great in this pen. Importanly, on all three modes, I love the clip. It’s a strong, thick clip with plenty of tension. But it doesn’t have too much tension to make it hard to clip to your pocket.
