Pelikan 600 Special Edition Tortoiseshell-Red Collection

Pelikan 600 Special Edition Tortoiseshell-Red Collection

Pelikan is a pen brand that I can consistently rely on. They are sturdy workhorses of a pen whether it’s an entry-level collection or a special/limited edition collection. At either end of the spectrum, I know I can count on my Pelikan pens to work when I need them to. Not only do these pens feel great in the hand, they’re aesthetically attractive. I still remember decades ago when the Pelikan Tortoiseshell in white first came out. That was my introduction to their Tortoiseshell finish. It was an attractive pen. And since I was too young (maybe 10 years old?) to appreciate fountain pens at the time, I bought the ballpoint and pencil. Since then, I’ve wanted every version they make. That’s why when I saw the new Pelikan 600 Special Edition Tortoiseshell-Red Collection, I knew I had to have it.

First of all, it’s gorgeous. The way the light reflects off of the polished red tortoiseshell resin is perfect. I love the ratio of (darker) solid red on the fountain pen’s cap and the ballpoint’s barrel to the complimentary tortoiseshell finish on the fountain pen’s barrel and the top half of the ballpoint. Not to mention the gold trim, which is the perfect accompaniment to these colors.

Secondly, the size of the Pelikan 600 Special Edition Tortoiseshell-Red Collection overall is so comfortable. The 600 size means it’s not too thin, and not too thick. There’s a decent amount of heft, while not overbearing.

Importantly, this special edition is only made in fountain pen and ballpoint. The fountain pen is equipped with a high-quality piston filling mechanism. It holds a ton of ink. I recommend using Monteverde’s Fireopal ink to match. As for the nib, it’s equipped with a 14k gold two-tone nib. You get to choose from: extra fine, fine, medium, and broad.

Finally, the ballpoint uses a smooth twist-action retraction. It’s easy for one-handed use. I enjoy refilling it with the Monteverde Parker Style ballpoint or gel refills. The ballpoint is balanced well. It’s a little top-heavy, which allows the pen to rest back in your hand nicely.
