Pininfarina GrafeeX Pencil Collection

Is the new Pininfarina GrafeeX Pencil Collection the greatest thing since sliced bread? Not exactly. But as far as pencils go, it’s quite the innovation. You might even call it the next evolution of pencils. It’s not a mechanical pencil, nor is it a wooden pencil. You don’t advance a piece of graphite forward. You don’t even need to sharpen the GrafeeX pencil. It’s unlike any pencil you’ve written with.

What sets this apart from the rest? Just the tip. The tip of the Pininfarina GrafeeX Pencil Collection is made of sintered graphite particles. The sintered graphite particles create a new compound that simulates a traditional graphite tip while bringing new properties to use. First, the tip is replaceable. Quick and easy to unscrew the front end is the housing of the graphite particles. Not that you’ll need to replace it anytime soon. That’s the next notable feature. The tip is so long-lasting that you won’t need to replace it for the foreseeable future.

While there are many preferences for how dark the imprint onto paper should be, this will definitely cater to those who prefer a light imprint. I would equate it more to that of a 4H hardness of regular graphite. Yet, unlike the actual graphite, this is not brittle at all. It won’t break as you write like a regular pencil would. Another benefit is how easy it is to erase. I was surprised at how well the markings erased off of my Rhodia paper. It also erases easily off of regular copy paper.

Another fantastic thing about this pencil is the body. It’s thinner, yet has a great amount of heft to it. Made of aluminum, the barrel is so durable and well-constructed. Yet it’s not going to slip out of your hand even though it’s made of metal. The matte finish keeps it from being slippery. The matte black finish also contrasts nicely with the clip.

The clip currently has six bold color choices that stand out perfectly from the matte black background of the barrel. Choose from blue, red, yellow, green, orange, and purple. These striking colors offer personality to your writing.

Also, the clip is quite lengthy. Boasting an impressive 2 ¾” long clip, it reaches halfway down the barrel of the pencil. While there is plenty of space between the clip and the pencil’s body, it’s mainly functional on the included custom sleeve. As the GrafeeX pencil is 6” long, I wouldn’t try to fit it in a shirt pocket anyway. It can, however, sit securely in a pen case with quick and easy removal. Speaking of the sleeve it comes with: it’s a high-quality, hand-stitched, elegant sleeve made of recycled leather. A nice touch is how the stitching color matches the color of the clip.
