When you think about great everyday writer fountain pens under $100, which brands come to mind? Perhaps you think about TWSBI, Lamy, Monteverde, Conklin, Kaweco, and Faber-Castell right away. But what about Retro 51? Their fountain pens sometimes fly under the radar despite having great value. We’ve all gotten used to waiting patiently for their next limited edition Popper throughout the year. Seeing which exciting new theme Retro 51 decides to introduce in their Poppers makes their classic Tornado capless rollerballs (aka ballpoints) fun to collect. As for Retro 51’s fountain pens, they added some creative finishes to the cap and barrel. Brand new is the Retro 51 Tornado Raw Brass Fountain Pen. This matches the Retro 51 Tornado Vintage Metalsmith Raw Brass Capless Rollerball already in existence.
First of all, if we were talking about the older Retro 51 fountain pens, I wouldn’t be able to recommend them as great writers. Sure, they were pretty, but the old nib and feed units didn’t function as well. Now, as evidenced by this Retro 51 Tornado Raw Brass Fountain Pen, the new nib and feed units are high quality and German made. Choose from: extra fine, fine, medium, and 1.1 stub. I don’t know why they skipped over broad with this one.
Secondly, as the finish is polished yet not coated, your Retro 51 Tornado Raw Brass Fountain Pen will start out shiny. Retro 51 did this on purpose, so that with use your pen will develop a patina over time. This effect will make it so that no two of these fountain pens will look the same eventually. The matching brass trim is a nice touch. And my favorite part is the green disc on top of the cap. However, the grip section is still a black plastic.
Finally, the Retro 51 Tornado Raw Brass Fountain Pen uses an international size cartridge/converter filling system. I can imagine filling it with Monteverde’s Canyon Rust ink to match the pen. It comes in Retro 51’s standard classic tube with various graphics printed on it. And since the pen comes with starter cartridges and a converter, this makes for a perfect gift (for yourself or for someone else).
