Visconti Opera Master Polynesia Collection

There’s something awesome about a larger pen. It feels more substantial. It feels like I’m writing with something majestic, like a large scepter. I’ll never forget the first time I heard Bert explain to a customer that there’s two pens everyone should have in their collection: a Montblanc 149, and a Pilot Vanishing Point. I paid close attention to this claim. I studied both, and completely agree. The Montblanc 149 got me thinking about larger pens, and I’ve always enjoyed how great they are. It has nothing to do with the size of my hand or how heavy/light the pen itself is. The Visconti Opera Master series is a great example of a modern larger sized writing instrument. The Opera Master comes in many finishes. The Visconti Opera Master Polynesia Collection is the newest, and is a limited edition of only 888 pieces made.

One thing I love about larger fountain pens is the ink holding capacity. Usually it’s also larger like the pen itself. As a translucent pen, this is especially cool in the Polynesia since you can see so much ink throughout the barrel. Due to its vacuum filling system, the barrel fills most of the way. I love how easy it is to use! You can even fill it one-handed! Like the other Opera Masters, this is also a double reservoir, so you have plenty of ink at the ready for immediate use, and then “ink storage” in the back for replenishing. When you travel (even in the car), you can seal all the ink in the barrel, which prevents any potential leakage.

Another notable thing about the fountain pen is the nib. This is the first collection in 2020 that uses the new 18k gold nib, produced entirely in-house by Visconti! Very exciting! It still uses the wide range of nib options: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and stub. The rollerball is also very easy to refill with the Schmidt 888 or 5888 refill.

Both the fountain pen and rollerball use the hook-safe locking mechanism, which allows a safer cap closing system. Pushing and twisting the cap and barrel hooks it into a locked position, preventing unwanted, accidental removal.

Since the Visconti Opera Master Polynesia collection is translucent, it’s mainly a lighter blue with bluish-greenish swirls. This is designed to remind you of the exotic Polynesian islands and beaches, calm light blue seas, and coral reefs in the water. I can see a nice, matching blue ink like the Monteverde California Teal (since it has some surprising sheening properties) coming out of this pen!
