Two pens for the price of one! - Every Kaleidoscope is available with both the traditional fountain pen section as well as a roller ball writing unit crafted completely out of solid sterling silver.
Created in 1817 by Scottish inventor Sir David Brewster, the word "kaleidoscope" is derived from the Ancient Greek kalos, (beautiful), eidos, (form or shape), and skope?, (to examine), which when combined translated to: "observation of beautiful forms". Brewster used the term to refer to his invention of a tubular device utilizing angled mirrors that reflected images of colourful objects. Initially intended as a scientific tool while he was working in the field of polarization of light, the Kaleidoscope soon became a fabulously successful object of interest and art among adults and children alike.
The Conway Stewart RiKwill Kaleidoscope edition draws upon the gleaming reflections brought to life by the original Kaleidoscope with a stunning enamel and sterling silver design. Each piece in the Kaleidoscope edition is uniquely individual, as the enamel is hand painted in vibrant combinations of complimentary colours: Aubergine, Peacock and Tortoiseshell. The vivid enamel is set into intricate geometric designs that grace both cap and barrel, providing the perfect counterpoint to the flowing combinations of colour.
The art of enamel to decorate precious metal has been a much loved European tradition for many centuries. Conway Stewart prides itself in its working relationship with the best of English craftsmanship. The artist for our precious metal enamelled series is known for his creativity and design in jewellery, plaques and trophies.
Robert Glover M.A. RCA, has been published in numerous industry titles and is the recipient of many notable awards and presentations. He uses a goose quill, cut as finely as possible for the use of writing, for the hand application of many layers of enamel over the engraved solid sterling Kaleidoscope silver caps and barrels.
The Kaleidoscope cap is adorned with repeated sets of hexagonal shapes filled with enamel and mix fluidly within the guilloche engraving designs. The cap is further accented with crisp enamel lines in a wave pattern set between the blocks of colour. Each Kaleidoscope barrel features lines of gleaming polished silver running between panels of swirling enamel, accented at each end with triangular shapes that echo the hexagonal design of the cap, with a wave line pattern set into the leading edge of the section. The cap top is inset with the RK logo in matching gradient colour enamel.
The solid sterling silver section leaves the weight centred low in the hand, ensuring that the pen is balanced well when writing and bears the English Sterling Silver Hallmark, the world accepted standard for precious metal.
Every Kaleidoscope is a perfectly balanced fine writing instrument that fits most any hand, and every one is produced as a combination fountain pen and rollerball, allowing the owner to switch between the timeless elegance of a traditional fountain pen and the simplified ease of a modern rollerball. The fountain pen uses the reliable cartridge-converter system for filling, while the rollerball offers the ease of a ballpen style pen with the graceful line of liquid ink. Whichever writing mode you choose to use, the Kaleidoscope is sure to bring a smile to your face as you enjoy the shimmering elegance of its beautiful enamel and sterling silver!
The Conway Stewart RiKwill Kaleidoscope is limited to 10 numbered pieces in a choice of colours: Aubergine, Peacock, Tortoiseshell and every pen is available with both the traditional fountain pen section as well as a roller ball writing unit crafted completely out of solid sterling silver. This allows the owner of the Kaleidoscope to switch from the classic elegance of the oversize 18 carat solid gold nib to a simple and easy to use roller ball that combines the convenience of a ball pen with the graceful flow of liquid ink.
-- Two writing modes for the price of one!
