“Consider the lilies, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”—The Holy Bible, Luke 12:27(ASV)
Marking our Tenth Anniversary in 2009, the Lily Collection speaks of our gratitude for all that is virtuous, beautiful and pure. In a world full of clouds and error, the Lily Collection reminds us of all that we hold precious, all that we hope for and all that we aspire to be.
The Lily Collection incorporates three levels of Guilloché engraving and multiple colors of translucent and opaque Hard Enamel. Each Sterling silver surface is first cut down to the level of the background, leaving the outer and inner accent lines in high relief. The backgrounds are then kiln-fired with opaque and /or translucent Hard Enamel.
The Lilies were the first Collection pieces to incorporate three colors of Hard Enamel onto one surface without separating lines in high relief. The three colors in the daylilies graduate and gradate inconsistently, emulating nature’s unique ability to distinguish one lily from another.
Guilloché
Hand-crafted from 18-karat gold and .925 Sterling Silver, each precious metal component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving, creating an intricate pattern known as guilloché; a painstaking process which brings light and life to the surface of precious metals. For the Winter Collection three levels of engraving are required; the first forms an ice pattern in high relief while the second, a pinstriped background is interrupted by a third dimension of frost.
Hard Enamel
Using a mortar and pestle, a composition of glass, water and metal oxides is ground for hours by hand. When settled, the water is removed, leaving the fine paste that is the basis for hard enamel. A quill is then used to apply each coat of the mixture to the surface of the metal, ensuring that the entire guilloché area is completely covered in enamel. The components are then fired in a furnace at temperatures exceeding 1,000° F, fusing the enamel to the metal and forming a layer of glass.
After cooling, the pieces are manually ground with a diamond file, restoring their proper shape and surface. This tedious process is repeated at length until the level of enamel reaches the depth required to cover the peaks and fill the valleys of each intricate guilloché pattern. When the final stages of firing are completed, the pieces are polished and buffed, revealing the velvet finish of translucent hard enamel.
Production of translucent hard enamel demands the highest levels of patience, experience and skill. A five-year apprenticeship is required to ensure that the highest levels of quality will be met in each individual Collection piece.
