Arita yaki is porcelain manufactured by the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture and is one of the most prized porcelains in Japan. There are three star kilns among the porcelain, "Koransha" and "Gentemonykiln," whose heritage is preserved 400 years of Arita tradition.

Among the standout designs is the Genemoncherry blossom pattern, an exquisite motif meticulously produced by the Arita-yaki kiln, which carries a legacy of craftsmanship that extends over four centuries. This extraordinary design is hand-painted onto a Sailor rollerball pen. The cherry blossom pattern draws inspiration from the elegant Iwanli-style pavilion, showcasing a vibrant palette that harmoniously combines deep indigo dyeing with rich red and luxurious gold accents. The delicate blossoming cherry blossoms symbolize the arrival of spring and resonate deeply as Japan’s national flower. Enhanced by the intricate "little Ivanli technique" of dyeing brocade, this beautiful design adds layers of depth and richness to the depiction. Moreover, the cherry blossom design from the renowned Gu Yi Wanli Fenglou Pavilion was selected as a special gift for Pope John Paul II during his historic visit to Nagasaki in 1981, further emphasizing its cultural significance and beauty.

Brief history of Arita

Arita is renowned as the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, with its history stretching back to the early 17th century. The discovery of high-quality clay in the region led to the establishment of Arita as a center for porcelain production, with artisans initially influenced by Chinese techniques.

In 1616, Korean potter Yi Sam-pyeong is credited with the development of the first true porcelain in Japan, which laid the foundation for Arita’s distinctive style. By the mid-17th century, Arita porcelain gained international acclaim, particularly for its vibrant under-glaze blue and intricate designs, attracting export to Europe and beyond through the port of Imari. Over the centuries, Arita has continued to evolve its craft, blending traditional artistry with modern innovation, and today it remains a vital hub for porcelain production, celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and cultural significance. Visitors to Arita can immerse themselves in this rich history, witnessing firsthand the legacy of a craft that has defined the city for centuries.

Today, Gen-emon kiln is known for its distinctive styles, incorporating the simplicity of Early Imari and the intricate elegance of Exported Imari, along with a unique contemporary flair. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted, embodying the traditional techniques of Arita porcelain. The artisans, with their expertise in throwing, painting, glazing, and firing, contribute to a collaborative effort that culminates in a stunning display of creativity and craftsmanship.

Arita porcelain has inherited the tradition of more than 400 years since the first porcelain was made in Japan in 1616 (Genna 2).

In recent years, we have begun to develop new markets in order to explore further development and possibilities.
