Acromegaly is a medical syndrome characterized by excessive production of growth hormone by the pituitary gland. This condition predominantly affects middle-aged individuals and can be challenging to detect due to its subtle clinical manifestations. Individuals experiencing an overproduction of growth hormone may continue to grow well beyond the typical cessation of growth, resulting in a condition known as gigantism. This phenomenon contributed to the fame of André René Roussimoff, widely recognized as André the Giant.
André began his wrestling career at the age of 17. Already possessing an imposing physical stature, he maintained a regular 9-to-5 occupation during the day while training at night under the guidance of a professional wrestling coach who identified his considerable potential. He started wrestling in local circuits and quickly gained international recognition across various countries, including the United Kingdom, Africa, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia. It was during his tenure in Japan that medical professionals first observed anomalies in André's growth patterns, leading to his diagnosis of acromegaly.
